Since 1992, Mediterranean Bakery has grown from a small West Vancouver bakery into a trusted producer of artisan and organic breads for families, retailers, restaurants, and our local cafe community.

Where it began
A European baking dream, built in British Columbia.
In 1992, Marko Zarolasky, a Yugoslav immigrant with a dream of bringing authentic European baking to Vancouver, opened Mediterranean Bakery Cafe at 523 Parkroyal South in West Vancouver. Soon after, head baker Don Nguyen joined the venture, and together they began developing the bakery's earliest products.
By 1999, that early promise had grown into real momentum: Mediterranean Bakery was delivering artisan breads to 37 Canada Safeway stores across the Lower Mainland.
What began as one immigrant's dream became a bakery built on craftsmanship, resilience, and relationships that have lasted for decades.

How the bakery has grown

1999–2001
By 1999, the bakery is supplying 37 Canada Safeway stores across the Lower Mainland. When the 2001 recession challenged small businesses across the region, Don led the bakery forward and relocated operations to 101-4713 Byrne Road in Burnaby.
Today
Don Nguyen and his son, Johnny Nguyen, now lead Mediterranean Bakery together, serving wholesale, retail, and deli-cafe customers across British Columbia while continuing to develop new organic products with a loyal team.

The move to Burnaby in 2001 marked a new chapter for Mediterranean Bakery. From our Byrne Road bakery, the business continued to grow by staying focused on dependable quality, artisan baking, and strong relationships with customers and partners.
Today, our breads and products reach customers through grocery retailers including Natural Fare Markets, Whole Foods Market, and Bosa Foods, as well as restaurant partners such as Global Group. We also serve retail and deli-cafe customers directly from our Burnaby location.
